What counts as high pressure gas storage?

Anything that holds gas at pressure rather than as a cryogenic liquid — tube trailers, tube skids, ASME vessels, DOT cylinders and cascade systems.

How is high pressure storage capacity measured?

Two ways: water volume in cubic feet, and the resulting gas capacity in standard cubic feet at fill pressure for a specific gas. Two vessels of the same water volume hold very different amounts of, say, helium and nitrogen.

What's the practical difference between ASME and DOT rated storage?

ASME vessels are built for permanent stationary installation and carry no periodic requalification requirement. DOT vessels are transport-rated and do — they must be requalified on a set interval to stay in service. A DOT skid can legally travel over the road loaded; an ASME skid cannot. This is the first thing a serious buyer establishes, because it decides what you can legally do with the asset.

What should I inspect before putting used high pressure storage into service?

Check the requalification or test status and when the next one falls due, since an expired vessel is a rehab project rather than a working asset. Inspect for external corrosion, pitting and impact damage, confirm the markings and stampings are legible, and check valves, manifolds and relief devices. On composite vessels, look closely at the overwrap for abrasion, cuts and UV degradation.

What documentation should come with it?

For ASME: the data plate, U-1A and National Board number. For DOT: the stamped markings including specification and manufacture date, plus the last requalification records. In both cases, previous gas service history — particularly whether the vessel has been in oxygen service or cleaned for it.

What drives the value of used high pressure storage?

Remaining time before requalification is due, the code stamp and whether paperwork is intact, the gas service it can legally enter, and condition of the pressure envelope. A vessel due for requalification next year is worth appreciably less than an identical one just tested.
