The right unit depends on three things: required flow in SCFH, delivery pressure, and how much heat your site can supply — ambient air is free but climate-dependent, while water bath, steam and electric units deliver consistent output regardless of weather.
Worth checking: Match the vaporizer to peak demand, not average. Undersized units frost over and starve the process; oversized ambient units simply cost more upfront.

What does a vaporizer do?
It converts cryogenic liquid — nitrogen, oxygen, argon, CO2, LNG — back into gas at a usable pressure and flow rate. Every bulk gas system needs one between the storage tank and the point of use.
What's the difference between ambient, water bath, steam and electric vaporizers?
Where the heat comes from. Ambient units pull it from the air for free but slow down in cold weather. Water bath and steam units use a heated bath or plant steam for steady output regardless of climate. Electric units use resistive heating — precise and compact, common indoors or in CO2 service.
Buying used cryogenic vaporizers
What should I inspect on a used vaporizer before buying?
Look for bent, cracked or missing fins and any sign of a previous freeze-up on ambient units. Check the process piping and manifold for cracks and repair welds, look at the inlet and outlet connections for damage or mismatched sizes, and check the base and support structure for corrosion. On heated units, inspect the bath, burner or elements, and the controls.
What fails first on these units?
On ambient vaporizers, the fins and the joints between fin and tube — thermal cycling works them loose over years, and ice loading bends them. On water bath and steam units it's the heat source and the controls long before the pressure envelope. Tube leaks are less common but end the unit's usable life when they happen.
What paperwork should come with a used vaporizer?
A legible data plate at minimum, showing MAWP, design temperature and manufacturer. On ASME-coded units, ask for the U-1A and the National Board number. Any prior service records, pressure test results and the original sizing or performance curve are worth asking for, since they tell you what the unit actually delivered rather than what it was rated to deliver.
What makes one vaporizer worth more than another?
Capacity and pressure rating set the band. Within it, intact documentation, verified prior gas service, straight undamaged fins and a recent hydro or pressure test all move the price. So does whether the unit can go into your service without cleaning or recertification — a vessel that has to be cleaned for oxygen service carries that cost with it.
