What is an ambient air vaporizer?

Why do ambient vaporizers ice up?

Vaporizing liquid pulls heat out of the surrounding air, which drops the fin temperature below freezing in continuous or cold-weather duty. Sites that run 24/7 typically pair two units and alternate them so one can thaw while the other works.

How does an ambient vaporizer derate in practice?

Rated capacity assumes a nominal ambient temperature and intermittent duty. In sustained cold or high humidity, and as frost builds on the fins, real output falls well below the plate figure. This is why continuous-duty installations run paired units on a switching cycle rather than one larger unit.

What should I inspect before buying a used ambient vaporizer?

Walk the fin bundle for bent, split or missing fins and for gaps where fins have separated from the tubes. Check for repair welds on the process tubing, corrosion at the base and supports, and any distortion suggesting the unit was dropped or lifted badly. Ask whether it was ever run past its duty cycle and iced solid.

What paperwork matters on one of these?

The data plate with MAWP and design temperature, plus the U-1A and National Board number if it is ASME coded. Prior gas service history matters as much as the paperwork — a unit out of hydrocarbon service is not going into oxygen service without documented cleaning.
