What does a cryogenic pump do?

It moves liquefied gas from one vessel to another, or raises it to delivery pressure, without letting it warm enough to flash to gas. Centrifugal, reciprocating, high pressure and transfer designs cover different flow and pressure ranges.

When would I use a centrifugal versus a reciprocating pump?

Centrifugal pumps move high volumes at moderate discharge pressure — tank-to-tank transfer, trailer unloading, continuous plant duty. Reciprocating pumps deliver much higher discharge pressure at lower flow, which is what cylinder filling, cascade charging and pump-fed vaporization need.

What should I inspect on a used cryogenic pump?

The cold end and its seals, since that is where cryogenic service takes its toll. Check the drive, coupling and bearings, look for evidence of cavitation damage on the impeller, and inspect the vacuum-jacketed piping if fitted. Ask how long it has been idle and whether it was purged and preserved before storage — an unpurged pump that sat is a different proposition from one that came straight out of service.

What should I ask about its history?

What product it moved, running hours, what has been rebuilt and when, and why it came out of service. Previous product matters for the same reason it matters on a vessel: a pump out of hydrocarbon service is not going into oxygen service without documented cleaning.

What typically needs work on a used unit?

Seals and packing are consumable and often need replacement regardless of condition on arrival. Bearings and the cold end are the costlier items. Budget for a rebuild on anything that has been idle a long time, and for commissioning support if the pump is going into a service it hasn't run before.
