What are process tanks?

Tanks and vessels that handle liquids and gases at moderate pressure — vertical and horizontal tanks, separators, filter separators and dampeners common in gas processing, oilfield and plant service.

What should I check on a used process vessel?

The code stamp and whether the data plate is legible and intact, external and internal corrosion, weld repairs, and the condition of nozzles and flange faces. Ask for wall thickness readings if any exist — on older vessels this is the number that decides whether it can stay in service.

What documentation should exist?

For a coded vessel, the data plate, U-1A and National Board number, plus any inspection or thickness survey records and relief device settings. Previous service matters here as it does elsewhere: what the vessel held constrains where it can go next.
