Questions buyers ask

Is this ASME or DOT rated, and what does that allow me to do with it?

This vessel is built to ASME Code N pressure vessel standards under Board 1221, which qualifies it for stationary liquid storage applications at fixed installations. DOT certification is not mentioned in the listing. ASME-rated vessels like this are designed for on-site use and cannot be transported over the road while pressurized or containing cryogenic liquids without additional DOT certification.

What is the requalification or inspection status?

The listing does not provide information about the vessel's current inspection status, last hydrostatic test date, or requalification history. ASME pressure vessels used in cryogenic service typically require periodic internal and external inspections per jurisdictional authority and insurance requirements, often on 3- to 10-year intervals depending on service and local code. Ask the seller for records of past inspections and the vessel's maintenance history.

What should I inspect before putting it into service?

At minimum, verify the nameplate is legible and matches the capacity and design conditions for your application, then conduct a thorough visual inspection for external corrosion, damage to supports or saddles, and condition of all nozzles and penetrations. For a 1986 cryogenic vessel that's been in storage, you should arrange for ultrasonic thickness testing on the shell and heads to check for internal corrosion or erosion, inspect the inner vessel if it's a vacuum-insulated design, and perform a hydrostatic or pneumatic test per ASME requirements before placing it in service. Have a qualified inspector review the vessel's fitness for your intended cryogenic service conditions.
