Questions buyers ask

Is this ASME or DOT rated, and what does that allow me to do with it?

This tank is built to ASME VIII Division II 2004 (2006 Addenda) and operates under DOT-SP14296 exemption, making it a UN portable tank (T50) approved for international transport under RID/ADR, UIC, and Transport Canada. The ASME rating qualifies it for stationary pressure vessel service, while the DOT exemption and international certifications allow road, rail, and intermodal transport of the approved products. Note that the DOT approval shows as "Unportable" in the listing—you'll want to clarify current DOT transport status with the seller.

What is the MAWP and capacity at service pressure?

The design pressure is 319 PSIG with a nominal capacity of 24,300 liters (4,419 gallons). The hydro test pressure is 478.625 PSIG. For liquefied gases like propane or ammonia, actual usable capacity depends on maximum fill limits for the specific product and transport mode—typically 80-85% for LPG and anhydrous ammonia under DOT and international regulations.

What is the requalification or inspection status?

The listing does not state current inspection or requalification status. UN portable tanks typically require 5-year external inspections and 10-year internal inspections under 49 CFR and international regulations, with ASME vessels often on similar intervals depending on jurisdiction and service. You should request documentation of the last inspection date, any due recertifications, and whether the DOT exemption remains active before proceeding.

What should I inspect before putting it into service?

Verify the condition of the shell and heads for corrosion or damage to the zinc coating, particularly at welds and support points where moisture collects. Check all valves, relief devices, and fittings for function and compliance with current code requirements for your intended product—previous service history affects what can be safely stored without cleaning or material compatibility issues. Confirm that nameplates, product plates, and transport markings are legible and that required certifications (ASME U-stamp, DOT exemption placard, UN certification plate) are intact, as missing documentation can prevent legal use even if the vessel is sound.
