Description
This is a used RIX Industries 4VX4BG-17.5 four-stage oil-free helium compressor with a 40 HP motor, rated for 60 SCFM at 50 PSIG inlet to 3,300 PSIG discharge. The unit includes a control panel and is designed for 100% continuous duty operation. This is one of two identical units potentially available; this listing represents the specific unit shown in the photos.
Performance: Inlet pressure 50 PSIG to discharge 3,300 PSIG, 60 SCFM flow capacity, 40 HP power rating, 250–750 RPM operating speed range.
Gas Compatibility: Helium (He). The RIX 4VX series is also compatible with Argon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, CNG, and other gas compositions.
Compression Stages: 4-stage oil-free compression with air-cooled heat exchangers, modular cylinder design, and a pressure-lubricated crankcase (uses standard automotive engine oil).
Cylinder Size & Stroke: 0.5"–5.5" diameter cylinders with 4" stroke.
Normal Operating Pressures:
Suction – 50 PSIG | 1st Stage – 140 PSIG | 2nd Stage – 400 PSIG | 3rd Stage – 1,300 PSIG | 4th Stage – 3,300 PSIG | BPR ~500 PSIG
Relief Valve Settings:
Suction – 75 PSIG | RV1 – 250 PSIG | RV2 – 600 PSIG | RV3 – 1,500 PSIG | RV4 – 3,500 PSIG
Operating Temperatures (100°F Ambient):
1st Stage – 320°F | 2nd Stage – 330°F | 3rd Stage – 340°F | 4th Stage – 320°F
(All after-coolers maintain ~20°F above ambient)
Safety Switches: Oil pressure shutdown at 25 PSI falling, discharge gas pressure stop at 3,300 PSI (restart at 3,000 PSI), suction pressure stop at 35 PSI falling, high gas temperature stops (3rd stage 450°F, 4th stage 390°F), and high vibration shutdown protection.
Dimensions & Weight:
Bare unit measures 41” W x 54” L x 36” H (approx. 750 lbs with flywheel). Typical packaged dimensions are 46” W x 88” L x 43” H with total weight between 2,000–3,000 lbs.
This RIX helium compressor is ideal for industrial gas facilities, helium recovery systems, aerospace testing, research labs, and high-pressure gas distribution applications.
Questions buyers ask
What capacity and discharge pressure does it actually deliver?
This unit delivers 60 SCFM at 50 PSIG inlet to 3,300 PSIG discharge. The control panel includes automatic stop/restart with shutdown at 3,300 PSI and restart at 3,000 PSI. Four-stage compression steps through 140 / 400 / 1,300 / 3,300 PSIG interstage pressures with air-cooled heat exchangers maintaining approximately 20°F above ambient after each stage.
What drive, power and cooling does it require?
The unit includes a 40 HP motor operating at 250–750 RPM and is rated for 100% continuous duty. Cooling is air-cooled via heat exchangers on each of the four stages; no external water or glycol loop is required. The crankcase uses pressure lubrication with standard automotive engine oil, while the compression path itself is oil-free.
What are the running hours and what has been rebuilt?
The listing does not state running hours, service history, or rebuild status. For a used oil-free helium compressor, ask the seller for total hours, when rings and seals were last changed on each stage, and whether the crankcase bearings or valves have been serviced. High-pressure stages typically require more frequent attention than the suction and first stage.
What should I inspect on a used compressor before buying?
Verify operation of all safety interlocks—oil pressure (25 PSI shutdown), suction pressure (35 PSI stop), high gas temperature (450°F on 3rd stage, 390°F on 4th), and vibration switches. Check interstage pressures under load against the normal values listed (140 / 400 / 1,300 PSIG) to detect worn rings or leaking valves. Inspect the control panel, examine the crankcase for leaks or metal in the oil, and confirm relief valve settings match the specification (75 / 250 / 600 / 1,500 / 3,500 PSIG). On RIX four-stage units, excessive temperature rise across any stage or failure to reach rated discharge pressure typically indicates valve or piston ring wear.
